Welcome Back

19-Jan-2017

As we begin the 2017 school year, I wish each of you a happy New Year and I hope that this year brings you happiness, success and good health.

At this time of the year I am always very enthusiastic about New Year’s resolutions, however, my commitment tends to lessen as the busyness of life takes over. This year, however, have decided to keep my resolutions very simple. One of them is to do a little more reading, and I have had the opportunity to spend time reading articles and books that both interest me, and have relevance for the work we do at St Mary’s.

In doing so I came across an article that ticked both boxes in an area that is quite important for all of us. The title of the article is 7 Skills Digital Kids Will Need in 2017 and Beyond. While I am aware of the benefits and challenges that technology provides I was concerned by some of the issues raised in the article.

The paper leads off with details about the results of a survey conducted in 2016 about how much time kids actually spend on their devices. The article reports that in 2017, teenagers will spend nearly 7 hours a day using their devices and this doesn’t include time spent using devices for school or in school. While we might argue with the figures and the cultural context, there is little doubt that kids are spending a lot of time on their phones, laptops, tablets and so on.

I have attached the article as it provides all of us with some tips on how to support our kids in managing technology in their lives. It provides us with some ideas on what we can do to set a good example and support our kids in gaining the benefits of technology, while enjoying all of the other good things that life has to offer.

Best wishes for a great year.
